4TH ASIAN KOI KARATE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2010

The 4th Asian KOI Karate Open Championship 2010 was hosted by Persatuan Karate-do Wilayah Persekutuan Putrajaya (Karate Putrajaya) from the 9th - 11th December 2010 at the Putrajaya Sports Complex, Precint 11, Putrajaya. The official hotel for the championship was the Legend Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

The various activities leading up to the championship were :
8th & 9th Dec : Registration of participants at the official hotel
9th Dec : Referee Seminar by Sensei Tommy Morris at MSN, Managers Meeting at Legend Hotel, Championship Draw followed by a welcoming Dinner for Sensei Tommy Morris and Team Delegates at the Legend Hotel
10th Dec Official Opening of the Championship by YB Datuk Seri Ali Rustam, Chief Minister of Malacca and President of MAKAF and then the Championship events - Kata & Kumite Age Categories
11th Dec Championship events - Kumite Weight Categories and Team events and close of Championship

This championship had a participation of 379 contestants for the individual events of which 187 were foreign contestants and 192 were local contestants. For the team events, there were 26 teams registered of which 17 were foreign teams and 9 were local teams. The championship attracted participants from 10 countries including Malaysia. There was a total of 43 categories contested over the 2 days.

The Championship was officiated and officially opened by YAB Datuk Seri Ali Rustam, Chief Minister of Malacca and President of MAKAF on 10th December 2010 with pomp and grandeur. The opening ceremony started with the arrival of the President of MAKAF and Mr Tommy Morris, President of Kobe Osaka International. In his speech YAB Datuk Seri Ali Rustam reiterated that it is indeed a pleasure to host Karate events in Malaysia as Karate is a continuous medal contributor to the Malaysian sporting team. He also gave his commitment to see Karate continue to grow in the country. He also congratulated the organising team, Karate Putrajaya, for organising a well planned and executed championship. Upon officially declaring the championship open, there was a launch ceremony with a grand display of light and laser works, an impressive pyrotechnic display ending with bursts of gold confetti streamers. The Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur brass band was also there to entertain.

The championship had 3 tatami's with approximately 50 officials adjudicating the bouts. The complimentary services provided to the teams during the 2 days of the championship included lunch packs for all athletes (over 400 packs were distributed), buffet lunch for officials and delegation leaders and a refreshment counter with hot drinks and snacks only for the officials (referees). The teams that booked their accommodation through the organisers at the official hotel were also provided with transportation to and fro the venue from the official hotel. The trip in the morning to the venue was with traffic police escorts to ensure the coaches were not delayed by traffic and arrived safely at the venue in Putrajaya.

The duration of the event was from 8.30am to 9pm on 10th December 2010 and 8.30am to 4.30pm on 11th December 2010. As part of the championship, there was also a full day Referee Seminar conducted by Sensei Tommy Morris. A total of 50 referees/judges attended the seminar. The event was conducted at the MSN premises with full meals provided. The seminar was a theory course with case studies and question and answer session.

There was also a welcoming dinner for Sensei Tommy Morris, MAKAF officials and selected officials from the teams. The dinner was hosted at the Coffee House, Legend Hotel and was a buffet dinner. Championship Souvenirs were also presented to the participating countries. A special gift was prepared for Sensei Tommy by the Organising Team and was presented to him by Mr Clement Soo.

The championship was organised by Karate Putrajaya under the stewardship of Sensei Thiagu Ponniyah. A team of 40 people were involved in the running of the championship. The duties included the set-up and tear-down of the venue, secretariat, tournament marshals, table officials, F&B stewards and security team.
